Dev By Dev — How It Works
how it works

From a system that's holding you back to one that doesn't.

Modernising software isn't a single event — it's a sequence of deliberate, lower-risk steps. Here's what each one actually involves.

1

Audit

We start by understanding what you have today — how the system is actually used, who relies on it, where it breaks down, and what's really driving the business behind it. No assumptions, no technical bias: we look at the real workflows before touching any code.

  • Review the existing architecture and codebase
  • Talk to the people who use it day to day
  • Identify the risks and the quick wins
2

Plan

We turn what we've learned into a practical roadmap: what needs to change, in what order, and what can wait. We're deliberately not trying to redesign everything on day one — the plan separates urgent fixes from longer-term improvements, so effort goes where it matters first.

  • Prioritise by business impact, not technical interest
  • Agree a realistic timeline and milestones
  • Flag dependencies and risks upfront
3

Rebuild in stages

Rather than one high-risk rewrite, we rebuild in manageable increments. Each stage delivers something usable, so you see real progress along the way and can redirect early if priorities shift — instead of waiting months to find out something was built wrong.

  • Incremental delivery, not a big-bang rewrite
  • Regular check-ins so you always know where things stand
  • Old and new systems can run side-by-side where needed
4

Migrate

When a stage is ready, we move data and users across carefully, with a rollback plan if anything doesn't go to plan. Migration is treated as its own piece of work with its own checks — not an afterthought squeezed in at the end.

  • Planned cutover windows, not surprise downtime
  • Data integrity checks before and after migration
  • Clear communication with your team throughout
5

Support

Once live, we don't disappear. We offer ongoing support to fix issues, make small improvements, and help your team get comfortable with the new system — with the aim of leaving you self-sufficient, not dependent on us indefinitely.

  • Bug fixes and monitoring after go-live
  • Flexible ongoing support, not a fixed retainer
  • Knowledge handover so you're not reliant on us forever
